Topic Spring 2020: Buddhism and Chinese Literature
This course examines the pervasive influence of Buddhism on Chinese literature from the medieval period to contemporary times. The influence went in both directions, with Buddhist monks and nuns engaging in literary pursuits, and lay authors incorporating Buddhist images and ideas into their writings. To explore this literary milieu, we will read texts in a variety of genres, including Buddhist scriptures, Zen poetry, ritualistic plays, and fiction with Buddhist motifs. We will also utilize sources in various media, such as painting and calligraphy, video recordings of Chinese operas, and films about monastic lives. Students in this course will gain a better understanding of East Asian Buddhism, the distinct literary tradition of China, and Chinese culture more broadly. No previous knowledge of Chinese language, literature, or Buddhism is required. All readings will be in English. The Chinese texts will be provided from time to time for students who are interested in consulting the original.
Prerequisites: Graduate standing in the Buddhist Studies Ph.D. program or consent of instructor
