EALANG C220 Readings in Buddhism and Buddhist Texts 2 or 4 Units

Description

Content varies with student interests. The course will normally focus on classical Buddhist texts that exist in multiple recensions and languages, including Chinese, Sanskrit, and Tibetan.

Fall 2020:

Readings in the Savitarkādibhūmi section of the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra
The portion of Yogācārabhūmi covering the the third, fourth, and fifth stages and sometimes known as Savitarkādibhūmi is long and interesting. It includes passages on the three Dhātus, pratītyasamutpāda, and heretical doctrines (paravāda). In this seminar, we will read selected passages in Sanskrit, while referring to the Tibetan and Chinese translations, as well as Ji’s Chinese commentary when it is relevant. We will start with Bhattacharya’s edition and update it with the emendations of scholars such as Lambert Schmithausen.
